Botulin

Botulin is a muscle paralyzing agent that blocs nerve endings. This may sound frightening but however, it’s use in specific indications is very safe. The nerve endings stimulate muscles and glands, like sweat glands. By blocking the nerve endings the muscles are paralyzed and glands stop their secretion. This way you can stop the contraction of facial mimic muscles with an ensuing reduction in facial wrinkles or stop the secretion of sweat. The effect of botulin is only temporary and lasts between 3 to 6 months for muscles and between 9 to 12 months for glands. The use of botulin has several interesting and efficient indications.

BOTULIN FOR FACIAL WRINKLES

There are 2 kinds of facial wrinkles. The first kind are the so called “static” wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that are visible with a face at rest. The second kind are the “dynamic” or “mimic” wrinkles. These wrinkles become visible by contraction of the facial mimic muscles like during frowning or laughing. Only these dynamic wrinkles can be treated with botulin. The most frequently treated areas are the crow’s feet, the frown and the forehead. The treatment takes only a few minutes and consist of several small injections. The effect can last up to 6 months.

BOTULIN FOR BROW LIFT

A brow that is positioned too low causes a sad and fatigued look. With age, and sometimes congenitally, the tail (lateral part of the brow) tends to come down. In mild cases this tail can be lifted by using botulin. In more severe cases a surgical lift can be considered. Botulin is injected at 2 or 3 sites near the brow causing a relaxation of the muscles that pull the brow downward. The effect lasts between 3 and 6 months.

BOTULIN FOR NECK BANDS

Some patients complain about the bands that appear in the neck with age. These bands represent the medial edges of the platysma muscle. By injecting these muscle edges with botulin, the muscle relaxes and the bands disappear. The effect lasts up to 6 months.

BOTULIN FOR EXCESSIVE TRANSPIRATION

Excessive axillary transpiration can be a burden. Botulin injection in the arm pits can resolve this problem. An average of 15 injections per side can block the sweat glands. The effect can last up to 9 months.

BOTULIN AS MIGRAINE TREATMENT

In some cases of migraine botulin can do wonders. This is proven by ample scientific research. The over stimulated nerve ending are blocked by the botulin with an dramatic decrease of the headaches. The treatment consist of several injections of botulin in the frown area, forehead, temple area and neck. The effect can last up to 6 months or even longer. Unfortunately, a small group of patients don’t experience this mostly excellent outcome.
